"Shooting an Elephant"
- First Published Fall 1936
     - New Writing Magazine

The narrator is a British Police Officer in India for the British Empire pushed into shooting an aggressive elephant who has stomped out the lives of the native people in India. Because the natives are willing him to shoot the elephant, he does so against his better judgment. He mentions a reason for shooting the elephant is to avoid being laughed at by the natives. He then experiences anguish watching the elephant die slowly and painfully, as the bullets weren't strong enough to take it down.

Often seen as a metaphor for the breaking down of Imperialism.
